Day 3 FEZ – CHEFCHAOUEN

Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, departure for Chaouen nestled in the mountains of the Rif chain in the north of the country. The small town, also called the “blue pearl”, was founded in the fifteenth century by Jewish and Muslim refugees who fled from the Spanish Reconquista. In the 1920s, after the Spaniards defeated the local resistance movement, visitors to the city were surprised to find that Chefchaouen’s Jews still spoke a dialect similar to medieval Castilian. The city, albeit small, still houses places worthy of note: the Outa Hamman square, the great sixteenth-century mosque, the kasbah, the museum of ethnography that tells the story of the ancient town, the Andalus district, where the first refugees settled when they arrived. The typical blue color of walls and streets dates back to the 1930s, and was used by the locals to protect the houses from the evil eye and also from mosquitoes. We will arrive in Chefchaouen after about 3 hours of travel.
In the afternoon start your guided city tour, characterized by artisans’ shops and by cafes and restaurants that offer beautiful views of the Rif and the city.
